While you might think the lush new bedding you’ve bought for your bedroom is perfectly fresh and ready to be slept in – this apparently isn’t the case.

Incredibly, people spend around a third of their lives in bed and sleep quality is a massive factor in how productive someone is.

A night of uninterrupted slumber makes for a much more productive person, while a disturbed night can throw someone off and even bring on headaches and impact how well someone can focus.

So, having the cosiest kipping environment possible is essential when it comes to getting a good night’s rest – but one expert has warned against sleeping in bedding straight out of its packaging.

Christian Alexander, the president and CEO of Nest Bedding, says giving new covers a thorough clean helps remove dust and dirt that might have gathered in the factory or on shop shelves.

He tells the Daily Express that this is particularly important for those with sensitive skin – who may suffer an allergic reaction to chemicals used during manufacture.

Clean Bedding Before Use
One expert has warned against sleeping in bedding straight out of its packaging.

Aside from the cleanliness, it’s also noted that not cleaning new bedding could affect how sheets feel, meaning that people might be missing out on their bedding’s ultimate comfiness.

A laundry expert at In The Wash tells the Express: “One culprit of this is a starch known as ‘sizing’.

“This starch is used to keep sheets smooth in their packaging to maintain that attractive, fresh look.

“This starch is what can make some bed sheets feel scratchy when they are first taken out of the packet.”

The expert also adds that cleaning new bed sheets helps people check for any potential design defects like tears or stitching snags – which might only be visible after washing.

Continuing their advice, the expert says: “To get the most out of your new sheets and remove that stiff feeling, give them a thorough wash by adding a cup of baking soda to the machine.

“When washed with warm water, the bicarbonate of soda will loosen up the sheets and get rid of any smells that remained from the production process.”

On top of washing new sheets, one cleaning expert has also warned against making your bed first thing in the morning.

Mrs D is famous for dishing out helpful house-tidying hacks and sharing them with her 130,000 Instagram followers.

She is now warning people to stop making their beds first thing in the morning, stressing the importance of letting them ‘breathe’.

She says that the hot, damp sheets attract bed bugs and dirt through the course of a night – and that people should be taking the covers off for a period after waking up.

Mrs D explains: “It seems a lot of people get up and make the bed straight away.

“This is something you need to stop doing.

“Get out of bed and throw the duvet back and let your bed breathe.

“During the night we not only sweat but also shed skin, and this is a magnet for dust mites and bed bugs.

“By making your bed first thing every morning you are trapping all that damp air and helping dust mites and bed bugs breed (sounds horrible, but it’s true).”
