How To Enjoy Your Halloween Quarantine

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, Halloween won’t be the same this year. Trick or treating is off the cards for kids, and with large gatherings not permitted, fancy-dress parties at your house will be limited to just your household. But just because we need to remain socially distanced, this doesn’t mean Halloween is cancelled!

There are still many different ways you can enjoy your Halloween safely at home. We have put together a list of some of our favourite things you can do this Halloween so you can still have a spooktacular time!

Go on a pumpkin hunt

A viral trend which has been making the rounds on Facebook recently is to take the kids on a pumpkin hunt as an alternative to trick or treating. A clever mum came up with his creative way of taking the kids trick or treating while keeping socially distanced. It involves taking the kids out and about around where you live searching for pumpkins, and for every one they find, the parents put a sweet in their bags. This trend is a way to get the whole community involved, if everyone buys a pumpkin, carves or decorates it, and puts it in their window, porch, or outside their house, then kids can go on a hunt for pumpkins this Halloween instead of trick or treating. Thousands of people all over the world have been sharing this idea across social media agreeing that it’s a great idea and saying they’ll be taking part, so why not get your street involved?

If you don’t fancy taking your children out and about on Halloween you can do a pumpkin hunt at home instead. Buy some mini pumpkins from your supermarket (or plastic ones online) and hide them around the house or garden with sweets in. Like an Easter egg hunt, your little ones can search for the pumpkins and collect the sweets!

Decorate the house

If we all have to spend Halloween at home this year, one way to get yourself into the Halloween spirit is to decorate your house spooky-style. Whether you want to go all out with black and orange decorations, or prefer something a bit subtler with just a couple of decorative pumpkins, decorating the house can be fun for adults and children alike. Read interior decorator Lydia Fahy’s (@home.ideology) blog on Halloween home decorating in our latest edition of the Swanday Times for some tips and inspiration on how to get Halloween ready with a touch of glamour.

Host a virtual party

By now, everyone has heard of Zoom. For many people, it has become their main form of communication throughout 2020, whether that’s for work or play. So, why not send out an invite to all your friends and family, tell them to dress up, and host a virtual Halloween party to mark the occasion. You can make some delicious snacks, get the drinks flowing, put on some spooky tunes, and have a devilishly good time with your favourite people. Why not host a Halloween themed quiz too for a bit of extra fun and some healthy competition, and give out virtual prizes for the best costumes?

Decorate Halloween themed face masks

Is there anything more 2020 than decorating a face mask for Halloween? Buy either plain disposal face masks, plain fabric face masks, or if you’re really into your crafting make your own mask from scratch and decorate them with some spooky patterns or faces. Whether you’re doing it for yourself or with your children, you can draw on the masks, sew on details, or buy craft pieces to stick on and get creative. You could do animal faces, spooky grins, a pumpkin face, cobweb pattern, and so much more, its completely up to you. It can even be part of your costume or a costume in itself! A fun activity for you and the kids, and it can help stop the spread of coronavirus too.
