A flight attendant has explained why you should never wear shorts on a flight.

Flying can be a pretty stressful experience, from packing and passing through airport security to delays and cancellations.

However, good preparation can help smooth the process.

And one cabin crew member has outlined some top tips when it comes to taking to the skies.

Tommy Cimato, known as @tommycimato on TikTok, has offered a variety of insights that can really help you on your way while travelling.

As well as his ‘never wear shorts’ tip, he also advises people to drink plenty of water.

Flight attendant warns: “Don’t, or try not to, wear shorts when you’re on an aeroplane.”

He says: “Stay hydrated. You wanna have about 16oz for every flight you go on, so keep that in mind.”

He also urges people to notify flight attendants if they ever feel sick or require assistance.

“Don’t feel afraid to let a flight attendant know you’re feeling sick,” he begins.

“So if you need food, water, or an air sickness bag, please feel free to let us know.”

Tommy adds that toilet hygiene is of the utmost importance, too, recommending that passengers never touch the flush button with their bare hands – as it’s likely covered in germs.

Instead, he suggests using a napkin or tissue that’s available in the lavatory to flush.

Interestingly, a 2015 study found that there were eight times more bacteria on seatback trays than on the toilet flush button.

Tommy admits that schedules between flights can be pretty tight, so it’s challenging to have enough time for deep cleaning.

With so many passing through an aircraft, it’s best to keep as little of your bare skin as possible from coming into contact with germ-infested surfaces.

Tommy also advises passengers not to sleep with their heads leaning on the window.

Outlining his reasons for the ‘never wear shorts’ advice, he warns: “Don’t, or try not to, wear shorts when you’re on an aeroplane.

“It’s the same thing as the window, you never know how clean it’s gonna be, so if you have pants, you’re gonna have fewer germs.”

And for those who think leggings or yoga pants are a good substitute for shorts, this apparently isn’t the case.

Aviation experts warn that artificial fibres in these types of clothing can be particularly flammable during an onboard fire, making them a safety risk.

So, while planning your next trip, consider sticking to full-length trousers, drink enough water, and do your best to avoid contact with dirty surfaces.

Follow these tips, and you’ll stand a much better chance of staying fit and healthy during air travel.
