Burnt Biscuits

There's nothing quite as pleasant as the smell of freshly-baked biscuits. And dipping one in your cuppa is even more enjoyable knowing that you did all the hard work yourself! So, it's understandable that many of us are tempted to put our aprons on, get the mixing bowl out, and take a few steps into the world of amateur baking...

And who knows where you’ll end up? Everyone starts somewhere, after all. You can’t win the Bake Off without making a few batches of delicious, crisp biscuits first!

When Disaster Strikes…

Of course, the reality doesn’t always live up to expectations. Whether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve got a bit of baking experience behind you, mistakes happen. Perhaps you forget to set the timer. The phone rings and you get caught in a catch-up with an old friend. The kids are having a fight and you have to play referee…

And suddenly, the smell you’re getting isn’t quite the one you imagined or anticipated. It’s not the sweet, indulgent smell of fresh biscuits – it’s the acrid, bitter smell of burning!

First things first: no need to be self-critical! Nobody’s perfect, after all, and mistakes are a great way to learn.

But it’s also important not to despair. Burnt biscuits aren’t the end of the world. In fact, there are many things you can do to save the situation. So, before you reach for the bin, read our handy tips on what to do with your burnt biscuits.

Grate them good

If your biscuits are just a little burnt around the edges, they may be quite easily salvageable. You won’t even need to make another cuppa – they’ll be ready for dipping right away! Simply take a grater – ideally a very fine one, rather than a cheese grater! – and grate away those burnt edges. Before you know it, all traces of burn will be gone and you’ll have perfectly cooked biscuits. Nobody will ever have to know!

Use your bread

Of course, if your biscuits have overcooked, they may have also gone a bit harder than you’d like them. Dipping in your brew will help, of course, but if you want to soften them up, here’s a little trick: store them in an airtight container with a slice of bread and leave them overnight. The biscuits will absorb moisture from the bread and soften up nicely!

Sandwiches are always the solution

If your biscuits are a little on the hard side, there’s another great option for making sure you still get yourself a delicious sweet treat – use them for ice cream sandwiches! Simply put a scoop of your favourite ice cream between two biscuits, press together and enjoy.

If all else fails, blitz them up! When it comes to desserts, there are many great options that require a crumbly biscuit base – a delicious peanut butter chocolate cheesecake, for example! Simply pop your overdone biscuits in a blender – the Swan Stealth Personal Blender is a great choice – and blitz to a fine crumb. Then, store them in the freezer in an airtight bag until you’re ready to use them!

So, as you can see, all is not lost when you burn your biscuits! Open the doors and let that burnt smell dissipate, then use one of our handy tips to make the most of the situation.
